Abortions are performed with local anesthesia from 6 to 13 weeks by licensed physicians and qualified residents.* Since CFHC is an outpatient clinic, women with certain high-risk conditions are referred elsewhere. In NH, no consent is required from a partner or parent and no age limits apply. Confidentiality is strictly observed.

Usually only one visit is required, although in some cases special concerns necessitate an extra visit for pre-counseling. CFHC will help to seek English language translation and signing when needed.

On the day of her abortion, each woman speaks individually with a healthworker who reviews her health history and responds to any questions or concerns she may be having about the procedure or her decision to have an abortion. She also receives in-depth information about the procedure, self-care instructions, and help in choosing a birth control method.

Women are encouraged to bring a partner, friend or relative for support. In addition, a CFHC staff member will provide support during the abortion procedure. After a half-hour of rest women are generally ready to leave and may resume most normal activities. Emergency consultation is available 24 hours a day by telephone. All women are encouraged to return to CFHC in three weeks for a checkup.

The abortion fee includes counseling, local anesthesia, lab tests, antibiotics, and a follow-up visit. Also included are free starter samples of birth control pills, contraceptive patches, vaginal rings or condoms and spermicide.

Services that women may need or request that are not covered by the abortion fee include:

  • Ultrasound for gestational dating (indicated for some women)
  • Rhogam for women with Rh-negative blood types
  • Pap test (done only if indicated)
  • Injectable birth control methods such as the Depo Provera

Ultrasound Services

CFHC offers ultrasound for gestational dating. If a woman is pregnant and unsure of the date of her last period, there are two ways she can find out how many weeks pregnant she is. One is to have a pelvic (internal) exam. A skilled clinician can usually assess the length of a pregnancy within about 2 weeks by feeling the uterus; but various factors, such as a very retroverted ("tipped" or "tilted") uterus can make this difficult. Ultrasound can generally provide an accurate assessment if done at 5 weeks or later. We are very pleased to be able to offer this service on site for our clients. In keeping with our commitment to affordable services, we have kept the cost for ultrasound as low as possible.
