Gynecological Exam Appointment

A routine gynecological exam (also known as the "annual exam") generally consists of a pelvic examination, a pap test and breast exam (and self breast exam instruction) Additional tests for anemia, STIs (sexually transmitted infections), cholesterol screening, etc. are done as requested or required.

Gynecological care at CFHC is provided by physicians and advanced practice clinicians(Certified Nurse Midwives, Advance Registered Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants).  Our doctors and practitioners have decades of experience in the field of women's reproductive health care and are sensitive to the varied and unique health needs of women: those of young and first time GYN clients, pre-menopause and menopausal women, lesbian and bisexual women, women with disabilities and others with special needs or concerns.

Miscarriage Management Appointment

If you are pregnant and bleeding, there is a possibility that you may be having a miscarriage. The first step is to determine whether this is the reason for the bleeding. This may include a physical exam, an ultrasound, and blood tests.

If you appear to be miscarrying your pregnancy, we will go over your options, explain their safety and effectiveness, and help you decide how to manage the miscarriage.   These may include medication to help your body expel the pregnancy tissue; a procedure to remove the tissue from your uterus; or watching and waiting.

We understand how frightening this may be for you, we are here to support you both emotionally and physically.

STI Appointment

These appointments generally are about 30 minutes.

First you will fill out some paperwork including a medical history.

Next you will be seen in the Lab to do the HIV test (a painless swab of your gums) and to provide a urine sample to test for Chlamydia and gonorrhea.

Next you will meet briefly with the practitioner to discuss any STD concerns or questions you may have.

After you meet with the practitioner to see if you need any any tests other than the standard STD tests. Then you will go back to the lab for blood work for a Syphilis test. At this time you may also have other blood work if you and the practitioner have decided other tests are necessary. Please note that any other additional tests will not be included in the $75 fee. Make sure you talk to the practitioner about what you can and cannot afford, as some lab tests can be expensive.

HIV Testing Appointment

Appointments for rapid HIV testing are scheduled by phone. The appointment will take approximately 30 minutes.
Included in the appointment is an opportunity to sit with a Healthcare Worker to discuss HIV risk and to develop a plan to reduce risk. This is not mandatory.

The test consists of taking a swab from your gums. The test works by detecting antibodies to HIV. Antibodies develop three months after a person has become infected with HIV. Testing done prior to three months may be negative because the virus is not detectable in the blood stream yet.

The test results are available 20 minutes from the start of the test. Test results are either “non-reactive” or “reactive” If your results are “non-reactive” this means you are negative for the HIV virus. If your results are reactive, this means you might be infected with the HIV virus. If this happens, we will then take a blood test for further testing. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled in one week to review the final test results.

ALL test results are confidential protected health information.

Abortion Procedure Appointment

Starting January 1, 2012, if you will not be 18 at the time of your abortion appointment, you will be required to inform your parents/guardian or get permission from a judge to have an abortion. Even if you live in another state, whether or not your home state has such a law, you must comply with the New Hampshire Law. This law applies to both medical and surgical abortions. Click here for a full explanation of this law.

When you call to schedule an appointment for an abortion procedure, please be aware that we will be reviewing a great deal of information with you, so give yourself about 10-15 minutes of private time to speak with us.  We will need to determine how far you are into your pregnancy, as measured from the first day of your last normal period (LMP). We will also be reviewing your health history. During this time we will discuss which abortion procedure is right for you, medication or surgical.

Once you have made your abortion procedure appointment, please download, print, read, and complete the following set of forms: Instructions for your Surgical Abortion Appointment

On the day of your surgical abortion, plan to be at the Health Center for approximately 4-5 hours.  You will need to have several labs completed including a urine pregnancy test and blood tests for Rh typing. An ultrasound test will be done to confirm how far along in the pregnancy you are.

Afterwards, you will speak privately with a health care worker who will review your health history. At this time, we will discuss your options with you, answering any questions you may have. It is important that you understand the risks and complications associated with all three of the pregnancy options; and that you have made a choice regarding your pregnancy of your own free will. Your health care worker will provide you with in-depth information regarding the abortion procedure and answer any questions or concerns you may have about the procedure or your decision to terminate the pregnancy.

Your health care worker will also help you examine the different methods of birth control and other related considerations as you determine which method of contraception is best for you. It is important to remember that all birth control methods try to prevent pregnancy, but not all try to prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases. If you are sexually active and using a form of birth control, it is important to pick a method that you will remember to use as directed to reduce the possible failure rate.

If your ultrasound shows that you are over 12 weeks pregnant, you will be required to take medication to help soften your cervix, making dilation easier. All clients will have the option of discussing whether taking oral analgesics and/or anti-anxiety medication are in their best interest and are available as needed.

The abortion procedure itself takes approximately 15-20 minutes. All are completed by caring, highly qualified, board certified practitioners. We encourage you to bring a friend, partner,  parent or grandparent, or other relative if you’d like. This person will be allowed to be with you during procedure and/or during recovery. In addition, a woman from our staff will be with you for support during the abortion procedure.

Following the procedure, we will make you comfortable in our recovery room where the nurse will give you a heating pad for your cramps, take your blood pressure and check on your general condition.  You will be ready to leave after 20 to 30 minutes; although you may have some mild cramping, you should feel well – in fact many women drive themselves to and from the appointment without any trouble. You will be given our CFHC handout "CFHC Surgical Abortion Aftercare Instructions" which provides detailed information about what to expect after your abortion.

We recommend that women give themselves the remainder of the day and evening following their appointment, to relax and recover.  Other than avoiding heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for a few days, we tell women that they will be ready to return to a normal routine the next day.

Abortion by Pill Appointment

Starting January 1, 2012, if you will not be 18 at the time of your abortion appointment, you will be required to inform your parents/guardian or get permission from a judge to have an abortion. Even if you live in another state, whether or not your home state has such a law, you must comply with the New Hampshire Law. This law applies to both medical and surgical abortions. Click here for a full explanation of this law.

Abortion by Pill is actually a miscarriage induced by a combination of medications.  It requires two visits to the Health Center, as well as a 24-hour period during which you will pass the pregnancy at your own home.

Once you have made your abortion by pill appointment, please download, print, read, and complete the following set of forms: Instructions for your Medical Abortion Appointment

On the day of your surgical abortion, plan to be at the Health Center for approximately 2 hours.  You will need to have several labs completed including a urine pregnancy test and blood tests for Rh typing. An ultrasound test will be done to confirm how far along in the pregnancy you are.

If you are sexually active and using a form of birth control, it is important to pick a method that you will remember to use as directed to reduce the possible failure rate.

Following your counseling session, you will meet with our medical practitioner, who will review your medical history and do a brief physical exam. She will then give you the first medication, Mifeprex, which you take by mouth in the office. You will be given our CFHC handout "CFHC Medical Abortion Home Care Instructions," which provides detailed instructions and what to expect.

Between 24 and 48 hours after you take the Mifeprex in the office, you will take four tablets of Misoprostol at your home, at a time you have agreed on with your practitioner.  The pregnancy tissue is usually passed within six to eight hours from the time you take the Misoprostol, but it may take longer, which is why we ask you to clear your schedule for 24 hours.

CFHC staff are on-call 24-hours a day, 7 days/week to respond to medical emergencies, answer questions and provide support to women undergoing the medication abortion procedure at home.  We urge women choosing this method to call us if they have any concerns about the process or their symptoms.
